Tom Watson and Theofanes Isamu explain the 30-day quarantine procedure used by the Micronesian Mariculture Demonstration Center (MMDC) prior to exporting juvenile giant clams, family Tridacnidae.

Before being placed in the quarantine tank each of the clams is scrubbed carefully and repeatedly pressure-washed with chlorinated tap water.

All ocean water entering the quarantine tank is first filtered through a 1-micron mesh bag. The flow rate is just a trickle. A large ultraviolet (UV) seawater sterilizing unit, operating independently and having a more rapid flow rate, draws water up from the tank, subjects it to intense UV radiation, then returns it back to the tank.

No feeds or other additives are used during the quarantine period.

This quarantine procedure allows a month-long observation period during which any predators, pests or parasites can be discovered and removed. It also allows cleansing of the organs and internal spaces ("depuration") of the clams with UV-treated water.

This quarantine protocol was developed by the South Pacific Commission (SPC), with input from MMDC and ACIAR, the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research, to help prevent unwanted species of organisms from inadvertently accompanying the clam shipments. It is an important prerequisite step for international ocean-to-ocean giant clam transfers.
